- 요약: Conditions and Prospects for Mature Democracy. This book is comprised of three parts and a total of six chapters. In Part Ⅰ entitled "Rethinking Democracy in Global Perspective." two introductory chapters are presented, which were originally delivered as Keynote Speeches at the International Conference held in the National Academy of Sciences. The first chapter by Kim Kyong-Dong, Professor Emeritus of Seoul National University, opens the volume with the title, "Is Perfect Democracy Possible?" followed by the second chapter on "Democracy : Between Hope and Despair" by David Held of Durham University in the UK.

제1부에서는 “세계적 관점에서 다시 생각하는 민주주의”(Rethinking Democracy in Global Perspective)라는 제목 아래 서울대학교 김경동 교수의 “완벽한 민주주의는 가능한가 ”(Is Perfect Democracy Possible )와 영국 Durham대학교 데이비드 헬드(David Held) 교수의 “민주주의: 희망과 절망 사이”(Democracy: Between Hope and Despair)를 싣고 있다. 제2부는 “아시아의 민주주의”(Democracy in Asia)라는 제목 아래 일본 동경대학교 와타나베 히로시(渡 浩) 교수의 “민주화가 왜 후퇴했는가 : 1920-1930년대 일본”(Why did Democratization Backslide Japan in the 1920s and 30s)과 서울대학교 임혜란 교수의 “한국의 민주주의 위기와 경제개혁”(Crisis of Democracy and Economic Reform in Korea)을 담고 있다. 제3부 “민주주의 공고화를 위한 제도적 설계”(Institutional Design to Consolidate Democracy)에는 미국 Journal of Democracy의 편집인인 마크 플래트너(Marc F. Plattner) 박사의 “자유민주주의는 왜 위기에 처해 있는가 ”(Why is Liberal Democracy in Trouble )와 고려대학교 백완기 교수의 “한국에서 성숙한 민주주의는 가능한가 ”(Is Mature Democracy Feasible in Korea )가 실려 있다.
